Members of the Journalism Club take a quick photo on stage at the DigiMarCon conference in Miami.

Boarding an airplane for the first time in its thirteen year history, the Journalism Club of Harford Community College took to the skies on a trip to North Miami Beach, Florida. As a student group, we attended the DigiMarCon Conference on digital marketing and shot some footage for Owl Media.

Being a very educational experience, much was learned throughout the trip. For instance, I learned how to shoot b-roll with my travel mate, Chloe, as we explored part of North Miami Beach while experiencing the water of the warm Atlantic Ocean. We even got invited to shoot a video for WMAR’s “Good Morning, Maryland” on our hotel room balcony with an amazing view in the background!

The challenges we had shooting videos were almost funny. On the first day, we kept getting soaked in the rain whenever we decided to leave our hotel rooms to shoot footage.

The club takes advantage of the clear weather to relax by the pool.

I asked Roger Newcomb, one of the three students on this trip, who his favorite speaker of the conference was. Roger responded, “Dennis Yu was my favorite speaker because he was outspoken, super engaging, and jam packed full of accessible information. ”I would have to agree with him on this and say Dennis Yu was my favorite speaker after Robin Dimond.

One of my personal highlights in the two days we attended the conference was Dimond’s speech on A.I. inventions. She was an incredible speaker and had a lot of personal experience with new artificial intelligence software.

I later asked Roger what his favorite part of the Miami experience was, and he responded with, “My favorite part of the Miami experience was taking a walk at night around a pond in the hotel golf course. All of surrounding buildings were lit up into the night, and I wondered what kind of people might occupy them, thinking of them living their cozy lives in these super plush apartment buildings.”

“Feeling the Florida breeze made me realize how lucky I am to have these types of academic experiences in my life.”

I asked Chloe Kruml, current student intern for Owl Media and journalism club veteran, the same questions about who her favorite speaker was and her favorite Miami experience. She answered, “My favorite speaker at the conference was Robin Dimond because I thought she was really funny, engaging, and I really liked her topic on augmented reality. I thought it was really interesting and cool. I also thought her speech was very informative, and I feel like anyone could’ve learned valuable information from it. My favorite part of my Miami experience was taking a walk around the hotel and seeing the surrounding city.”

If I was interviewed for this article, I’d say my favorite part of the Miami experience was running on the beach, the water being clear instead of grey, and walking around with all of the palm trees and their sub-tropical fragrance. I like that you can tell you’re in Miami as soon as you get off the plane. Feeling the Florida breeze showed me how lucky I am to have these types of academic experiences in my life and made me want to maximize my experiences everywhere to not miss out on opportunities like these.

This trip was overall a great experience, and I would highly recommend joining the journalism club if you want to take a trip like this in the future!

The end of a successful trip marks the beginning of a new journey for the Journalism Club.
