If you’re anything like me, you just want to get your classes done and over with, and don’t want to give after-school activities a thought. I had one experience, however, that changed my perspective on that. That experience was joining Owl Media this year. I’ll go over how that changed my prospect and why you should join Owl Media.
The first reason you should join Owl Media is the experience it gives you. If you need stuff to put on your resume, joining Owl Media will get you the experience you need. Whether you’re a videographer, photographer, writer, or editor, you will be able to get experience in all those fields. Plus, you will be able to have all your work published and easily accessible for you to show off your work to future employers.
The second reason you should join Owl Media is the skills you gain working with others. This is a student media publication, which means whether you like it or not, you will have to work with others to get projects done. Luckily the people here are very easy to work with, and can help you reach your goals.
The third reason you should join Owl Media is that it’s easy to schedule around. Meetings are held once a week. After that, you can work on projects at any time. Advisors are also very flexible and can offer assistance around your schedule. Everyone at Owl Media is very understanding about how busy students are and if you communicate effectively, you shouldn’t have any problems.
The fourth reason you should join Owl Media is the social aspect. A media publication like this takes many people, and working together is a crucial aspect, but it’s also a good way to meet new people and create relationships that last even after your college years. One of my personal favorite moments was going to the National College Journalism Convention in New York City. At that event you can network with others, which could help you to get a job. Working with Owl Media will help you to get out of your shell socially.
Those are just some of the reasons you should join Owl Media during your tenure at HCC. At first, I didn’t want to join any of the clubs and just wanted to get my classes done. But once I saw how much experience you get at Owl Media, I realized it was so beneficial for me to join. Don’t think of it as an after-school activity, think of it as another way to further your future career.
