When I first got involved with Owl Media in 2018, I had no idea how central it would become to my professional growth. What started as an internship requirement evolved into an invaluable learning experience, one that equipped me with the skills to navigate an ever-evolving media landscape.

From my early days as a student intern to my current role as Technical Advisor, I’ve witnessed first-hand the dramatic shifts occurring within media. In 2020, I took on the role of Social Media Editor, and it taught me the importance of storytelling, not just in creating compelling narratives but in understanding how to capture and retain an audience’s attention in a fast-paced digital world.

The transition from print to digital-first strategies has profoundly impacted the way we work. As someone who has managed social media platforms and now mentors students in the technical aspects of media production, I’ve seen how the integration of tools like SEO, social media algorithms, and multimedia content creation have reshaped the way we communicate. At Owl Media, I’ve had the privilege of guiding students through these shifts, helping them hone their skills as they adapt to this constantly changing environment.

From Fall 2023 through the Spring of 2024, my role expanded to Interim Chief Advisor, overseeing the direction of the publication as well as assisting in day-to-day production tasks. This allowed me to contribute not only to the growth of the publication but to the professional development of the students involved. The lessons I’ve learned through mentoring others have been just as important as those I gained during my own growth within Owl Media.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my journey has been watching students evolve and hone their skills in media production. The fast-paced, ever-changing demands of the digital age can be overwhelming, but Owl Media offers a supportive environment where they can experiment, learn, and develop their skills.

Looking back, my only regret is not getting involved with Owl Media sooner. The skills I’ve developed—from technical media production to leadership—have been crucial in shaping my career. As I look to the future, I’m excited about what lies ahead for both myself and the publication. With the continued evolution of media, there will always be new challenges, but I’m confident that Owl Media will remain a dynamic space for growth, innovation, and mentorship.
