Meet Owl Media’s Editor-in-Chief, Luke Teigue.

I used to think of college as the social and exciting gathering of hundreds of students that the movies always seemed to portray. Thoughts of endless lecture halls and thrilling sports events were present in my mind throughout senior year of high school.

In March of 2020, the Covid-19 virus put a halt to the typical “in-person” learning I had been accustomed to for most of my life. Education shifted to online learning, and friends I had previously seen daily were now in small squares on a zoom meeting.

This new system of learning continued on as I entered my college days at HCC. Although some in-person classes were offered, remaining online was my preferred choice. The restrictions on social distancing became less severe as time moved on. Going into my first spring semester, I was ready to learn from a more diverse group of courses.

Multimedia Journalism 1 was the first of these new classes I was interested in. It was my introduction to a world of interviews, video assignments, journalistic writing, and so much more. My professors and advisors gave me the tools to utilize creativity unlike any class I had taken before.

Within the first week, my fellow students and I had already started work on a financial video piece using real camcorders and audio equipment. It was a fulfilling feeling learning so much in only one semester, and gaining hands-on experience after being online for so long.

The excitement I previously had for the lectures and the sports events had become real, in a much different way. I began looking forward to where the experience could take me instead of being caught up in a problem that I couldn’t control.

Throughout the remainder of the semester, I used the support I had been given to pursue as much as possible. I saw my grandparent’s home in a new light when I was assigned a photo series. Classmates became friends as I helped them with their own projects. My love of traveling was rewarded on trips to Washington, D.C. and Ocean City.

I truly felt as though my work was appreciated and utilized to its full potential. Videos I had a hand with creating went on to be published by Owl Media, with some even achieving national awards. My college experience had turned out to be liberating in ways I had never anticipated.

Now, after nearly three years, I continue to cover protests, photograph wildlife, and pursue further experience in audio production. Owl Media provided me with the knowledge and love for journalism I have today.

It is a great pleasure to serve Owl Media as the official Editor-in-Chief. I encourage anyone who may be interested to reach out (harfowl@harford.edu), and I look forward to working with each and every one of you!
