Owl Magazine’s 2011-2012 staff transformed the College’s newspaper into an award-winning glossy magazine.
Fourteen years ago on January 4, 2010, I worked my first day as newspaper advisor to “The Harford Owl.” It’s hard to believe it has been nearly a decade and a half since the students and I transformed the school “press release,” which was heavy with employee contributions, into a student-run newspaper!
Then, the following year we achieved what some had warned would be impossible: we transformed the school newspaper into a a glossy magazine that became a favorite in the community and on the stands in local businesses, high schools and libraries.

Owl Magazine’s 2019-2020 staff traveled to Washington DC to cover the impeachment of President Trump.
If there is anything constant in media, it is change… so it wasn’t long before we tackled our next challenge! We began producing videos, covering national news stories on the front lines. We established a social media presence on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube and most recently, launched a website: owlmedia.org.
It’s hard to wrap my head around the 43 national awards, but at the end of the day that recognition pales in comparison to the experiences shared and the connections made. It’s been an incredible gift to work with so many exceptional students and such a privilege to still be in contact with so many, no longer students but now my colleagues and close friends.
In the words of Margaret Mead, “never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
