Besides being a source of eggs for families around the world, chickens can also make for excellent pets and provide hands-on learning experiences for kids.

I never expected to see someone cry over a chicken—but I did.

It was a warm spring afternoon when I saw my neighbor quietly dismantling the small wooden coop she had spent weeks building. A county inspector had issued a cease-and-desist, citing our neighborhood’s ordinance against backyard poultry. Her flock? Three gentle hens she cared for like pets.

They were not noisy, and they were not a nuisance. They were simply a way to provide her family with fresh eggs and a little independence from the rising cost of groceries.

To outsiders, it might seem like a minor issue, but it’s not so simple. Outdated laws do more than just restrict chickens—they restrict choice, sustainability, and the right to feed our families the way we see fit.

I have always believed food freedom should be a basic right. In a time when grocery prices are soaring and ingredient labels are full of things we can’t pronounce; many families are turning to backyard hens for healthier, more affordable options. The eggs are fresher, their waste becomes garden fertilizer, and the impact on the environment is minimal.

It’s not just a fringe trend. According to the Pew Research Center, interest in backyard chicken-keeping has grown steadily since 2020, especially in urban and suburban communities. For most families, the decision isn’t quirky—it’s practical.

Yet in many places, Maryland included, local ordinances still prohibit backyard chickens. These bans are often rooted in old fears about noise, odor, and disease. Those fears do not reflect reality anymore.

According to a 2022 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the health risks from keeping backyard poultry are minimal, especially when basic hygiene is practiced. It’s no more dangerous than owning a dog or a cat.

I reached out to my college friend Sam, who raises hens in a neighboring county where keeping chickens is fully legal.

“They’re quieter than my neighbor’s lawn mower,” she explained. “And honestly, my kids learned more about responsibility from those chickens than they did in three years of after-school programs.”

As stated by Harford County Bill NO. 23-010, a minimum of one acre is required for the keeping of homestead chickens. This restriction was even more pronounced prior to the bill’s amendment in May 2023, when additional zoning certificates, acreage requirements, and coop building regulations were more strict.

Instead of banning chickens outright, local governments should create fair and thoughtful regulations—rules about the number of birds, property setbacks, and sanitation. We already make room for barking dogs, outdoor cats, and early-morning lawn equipment, so why are chickens still treated like they’re a public threat?

At the heart of this issue is more than just access to eggs. It’s about food security, environmental awareness, and trusting people to make responsible choices for their families.

Watching my neighbor tear down her coop felt like watching the system punish someone for doing something good. Since when did choosing a simpler, more self-sufficient lifestyle become an act of defiance?

It’s time to revisit these outdated bans. Our communities deserve the right not just to plant gardens—but to grow resilience.
