Owl Media, Harford Community College’s student multimedia publication, found success at the Apple Awards this year, winning national awards in six different categories.

Student media publications from across the nation entered the competition, and winners were announced at the ProCon 25 Convention held February 26 to March 1 in New York City. Harford Community College’s Journalism Club was in attendance at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square, where the convention was held.

“Remembering Rachel Morin One Year Later” and “Halloween in New Orleans” by Luke Teigue marked Owl Media’s first wins in the Apple Awards photo categories, placing second for “Best News Photography,” and winning an honorable mention for “Best Feature Photography.”

The photo package “Remembering Rachel Morin One Year Later” shared coverage of a memorial walk on the Ma & Pa Heritage Trail in Bel Air, where long-time friend Claudia Brown and Editor-in-Chief Luke Teigue were in attendance.

Owl Media won third place recognition for “Best Multimedia Package.” The projects submitted for this category included an article, “My Perspective on the People’s March: An Op-Ed”; one video, “The People’s March 2025”; and a photo package, “The People’s March.” Reporting, narration, videography, and writing were provided by Tacy Brown, with photography, videography, and video editing by Luke Teigue.

Owl Media’s social media coverage of the People’s March also won the publication another third place for “Best Social Media Coverage of a Single Event.”

In her first year as a staff member, Tacy Brown won multiple Apple Awards for her writing, reporting, and videography.

Only two years after transitioning from the printed Owl Magazine to an online website, Owl Media won a second award in the category, placing third for “Best Feature Website.”

For “Best Opinion Column,” Tacy Brown’s article “Cornerstone of Change: The Power of Peaceful Protest” won an honorable mention, again marking the publication’s first award in the category.

The Apple Awards have been held in New York anually since 2007, and Owl Staff have been attending the convention since 2010.

The 2024-2025 student staff was led by Editor-in-Chief Luke Teigue and advised by Claudia Brown, Brendan Flanagan, Stephanie Perkins, and Brianna Skrivanek.

Owl Media released print magazines from 2011-2020 as Owl Magazine, and is composed of students and staff from Harford Community College. Videos on YouTube and Facebook have been published since 2014 and a website was launched in late 2022. The publication has won 55 national awards since 2012.
