On the first day of MC 210, I had no idea what to expect, but I’m glad I gave it a try. MC 210: Introduction to Social Media is a class taught by Professor Claudia Brown. This class is a great way to introduce yourself to the marketing world of social media. In this class you learn hands on skills that in this high-tech, media frenzy world are extremely important.

Former student Abbey Kraus from MC 210 stated: “I think the class is a great way to help people come out of their shells. It helped me become more comfortable with presentations and posting on social media.”

As a former student myself, I resonate with this quote. During my time in this class, one of our major projects was creating a social media account of our choosing, and creating a platform of whatever we were interested in. I had a lot of creative freedom which I enjoyed and ended up creating a fashion page.

Former student Nneka Iweanya used her social media platform to insight others on history. Her Instagram page shared stories that our main news does not feature. Kraus started a flower business for her Instagram page.

MC 210 was also refreshing as a student because there were no quizzes or tests, only projects primarily focused on selling yourself as a marketer and influencer. We had homework readings on Gary Vaynerchuk’s most recent book, Day Trading Attention: How to Actually Build Brand and Sales in the New Social Media World.

I enjoyed reading this book because it was easy to read, and the chapters were short. It was informative on building your brand and helped me learn more about the social media world. It was also only $12 which was a nice change from the expensive textbooks we read in core classes.

Another project we focused on throughout the class was taking over Owl Media’s social media pages. Each one of us took over a different social media. I led Instagram while the other students took over YouTube and Facebook. This project taught me how to come up with creative ideas and brainstorm the best way to encourage fellow students to want to join our club.

Students should feel encouraged to join this class because the skills you learn are extremely relevant in the current world. It is a pretty easy-going class, and if you already love posting on social media this class is definitely right for you!
